Its February of 1903 and the IBF tournaments are almost decided. Today we feature the heavyweight title fight between James Jeffries 23-0-0 (23) and Jack Johnson 22-0-0 (18). Jeffries was the #1 seed in the 4 man tournament and advanced by scoring an 11th round knockout over the #4 seed, Hank Griffin. Johnson was the #2 seed and advanced by scoring a 12th round knockout over #3 seed, Denver Ed Martin. Coming into this fight most experts felt that Johnson would out box the slower Jeffries. Johnson did utterly destroy Martin in his opening round bout.

In the opening round both fighters were just feeling each other out but Jeffries landed a solid hook the shook Johnson so the round went to him. The fighters began to let their hands go and rounds 2 and 3 went to Johnson even though it appeard Jeffries was the aggressor. In the 5th round Jeffries had a point taken away for a low blow, he however won the round as well as the 4th. The fight went back and forth until the 14th round. Early in the 14th round Johnson developed some swelling around his left eye. Seconds after the swelling started Johnson was caught with a clean hook and he hit the canvas. Johnson regained his feet quickly and the action resumed after a 3 count. Jeffries smelled blood in the water and attacked violently. Johnson took a clean cross and was on his way down when the ref grabbed him and stopped the bout with just 15 seconds left in the 14th round. James Jeffries wins by tko and leaves as the New IBF Champion!

I had it 124-124 on my card. The other cards were 121-125,123-124,123-124 all for Johnson.

LHW February 1903
The IBF title fight for this division promised to be a good one. A classic matchup of fighter verse boxer. Joe Choynski 22-0-0 (22) will square off with Philadelphia Jack O'Brien 25-0-0 (14). Choynski comes into this fight the favorite after destroying Robbie Conner with a fourth round knockout. Jack O'Brien won his bout with a convincing unanimous decision over Joe Butler. The big question coming into this fight is can O'Brien withstand the power of Choynski who has averaged only 2.1 rounds per fight.

The fight opened withO'Brien simply out boxing the aggressive Choynski. In the fourth round, Choynski had landed some power punches that opened a cut in O'Brien's mouth. At the end of the fifth round you could tell that O'Brien was getting tired of absorbing Choynski's punches on his arms and gloves. Choynski managed to pin O'Brien to the corners for the next couple of rounds but as the fight progressed O'Brien used his elusiveness to keep clear of Choynski's punches. It seemed as if O'Brien knew exactly when and where Choynski was going to punch and he avoided them and countered with his own quick punches. The fight went to the scorecards and all the judges saw it in favor of O'Brien (145-144,145-143,147-142). I agreed with the last card. Choynski threw 1,651 punches landing only 256 a poor 15.5%. O'Brien threw just 600 punches but landed 460, an amazing 76.7%.

MW February 1903

This month we we decide the IBF Champion of the middleweight division. Bob Fitzsimmons 25-0-0 (25) steps into the ring with Fred Morris 19-0-0 (9). Fitz is coming off an 8th round TKO of Frank Craig. Morris handed Mike Donovan a real whipping in his 12 round unanimous decision. The two fighters are different in style and should make for an outstanding championship bout.

Early in the fight you could see that Fitzsimmon's power was gonna be a problem for Morris. Morris is a clever fighter and managed to create angles that gave Fitz a problem. In the second round Fitzsimmons was called for an intentional headbutt, the headbutt caused a cut over Morris' eye. Morris was clearly bothered by the cut and late in the fourth round he had taken enough of a beating that the ref stopped the bout, awarding Fitzsimmons the win and the title.

Undercard:
Harris Martin 24-0-0 (21) (KO 6) Tom Thomas 18-1-0 (13)
Charles Goff 23-0-0 (14) (MD 10) Jack Stelzner 23-1-1 (8)
Al Neill 18-0-0 (5) (KO 1) Bill Jennings 18-1-0 (11)
Billy Stift 15-1-2 (4) (UD 10) Ted Pritchard 14-2-2 (7)
Owen Higgins 12-7-2 (6) (TKO 6/Cuts) Billy Woods 9-8-1 (1)

Coming up:
Welterweight IBF Title fight featuring Joe Walcott 21-0-0 (15) v/s Young Peter Jackson 25-0-0 (21)

WW Feb 1903

Finally its time to settle the debate on who is the best fighter in the welterweight division. Joe Walcott 21-0-0 (15) will square off with Young Peter Jackson 25-0-0 (21). Walcott is coming off an impressive ten round unanimous decision over Rube Ferns. Jackson was awarded a TKO in the eleventh round of his last fight with Jim Franey.

This was a good fight through the first six rounds. In the seventh Walcott had a point deducted for biting. Midway through the 12th round, Walcott caught Jackson flush with an uppercut that sent him to the canvas. Jackson regained his feet and survived the round. Early in the 15th round Jackson suffered a cut over his eye and it appeared Walcott had finally broken him down. Late in the 15th round, the fight was getting physical on the inside and the ref caught Walcott using his elbow. The ref immediately stopped the bout and disqualified Walcott, awarding Jackson the win and the IBF title. The cards were 134-131, 134-131, and 136-129 all for Walcott.

Undercard:
Dixie Kid 24-0-0 (10) (SD 10) Owen Ziegler 23-2-1 (13)
Jim Janey 21-1-0 (12) (TKO 8) Young Corbett 18-1-0 (7)
Matty Matthews 15-1-2 (2) (UD 10) Danny Needham 23-2-0 (17)
Tommy West 19-3-0 (12) (TKO 8) Perry Queenan 17-3-0 (5)
Mick Dunn 16-5-1 (9) (UD 10) Bob Allen 9-10-4 (1)

Coming up Lightweight Title Fight between Patsy Sweeney 24-0-0 (18) v/s Jack McAuliffe 25-0-0 (23)

I finally broke down and bought a new computer so I could quit replacing parts and crashing. I am currently simming in some history. I started in the early 1830's and am now into 1870. Its coming together nicely.
