Post Westview Football
I will use this thread to post on Westview Football for the upcoming Season......This will be a preview.

QB - We are going to throw a lot more this year as we have a very athletic Junior with a strong arm. Jourdan Grandon started 3 varsity games last year at QB when the starter was hurt and did well. He also started the entire year at Safety, which will only help to slow the game down for him. He has had a great spring and led us to a record of 20-5-1 during passing league. (Granted these games don't mean much, but he threw real well) Backing him up will be my Freshman QB from last year Nick Sorinson, much to everyones surprise. We have kids better mechanically, but he just doesn't get rattled and always makes good decisions.

RB - We took a huge hit here losing Brian Conley and Reggie Nicholson, who both rushed for over 1500 yards. (Another reason we will throw more) I was hoping one or more of my talented stable of Freshmen running backs from last year would step up, but it has not happened. The main kid this year will be sophomore however, though he transferred from another school. Carlton Williams is a young version of Reggie Nicholson and we get him for three years at FB. The only negative is we do not have another back the equal of Conley to stop teams from keying on him, so our passing game becomes ever more important. Joining Carlton in the backfield at this time will be seniors RJ Robinson and Joe Lauer. RJ is shifty, but very small (5'6" 140 lbs) and will not be able to handle much more than 8-12 touches a game. Lauer is the WB and a smart kid who is also light in the ass and won't make any big plays, but won't make many mistakes either. Cory Hemingway (TB) and James Salcido (WB) will also see time.

Rec - Juniors Nate McOwen (SE) and Eric Ramsey (TE) will be Grandon's two primary targets. They both played extensively on varsity as Sophmores last year and will both start on Defense as well. McOwen is not a burner but runs routes more precisely than probably any kid we have ever had and does not drop the ball. Ramsey also has great hands and is tough as nails, we played FB for me as a Freshmen and started at LB last year on Varsity and brings a hardnosed mentality to the table. Others in the mix at SE are Jr Joe Espinoza and So Jordan Champion (One of my Tailbacks last year, who just needs to grow a little more)

O-Line - Despite losing two time all-Arizona C Guy Reynolds (Signed with the University of Idaho) the line will likely be better than any we have ever had. Stepping in at C is Soph Brennan Bowen (Head Coaches son) who is a beast. He already holds the sophmore class record for three lift total, surpassing 1000 pounds during spring testing. He also squatted 225 68 times at a lineman competition in the spring and will shatter all school strength records before he is done. The strong side will be manned by Jr Willie Chaffee and Sr Jonathon Higle, both returning starters and smart kids who know their assignments well. Chaffee is barely 210, but pulls well and has a nasty streak in him!! On the weakside we will have two new starters in Sr transfer Terry Williams (Carlton's big brother) at QT and Sr Victor Carrasco at QG. Carrasco missed his entire Jr yeat with a back injury, but has worked as hard as any kid I have ever seen and is tough as nails. Williams is a plain out freak. 6' 265 lbs and runs a 4.8 forty!! Plus he broke the school squat record getting 605 lbs up in the spring. If he was 3 inches taller 30-40 D1 schools would be camped out on his front porch. He will also play some fullback in certain situations and his brother will move to TB when that happens. Also contributing will be Jr's Greg and Alex Meron, Damon Truax and Justin Temple, as well as Sr's Vincent Shatwell (Another physical freak who starts on the D-line) and Kevin Gunn. We are very deep here and will be in good shape up front for the next two years.

I will do the Defense later

On a side not, this years incoming Freshmen class may be our best ever. I am getting two legit running backs, one of which may actually spend some time with Varsity (I hope not) and several big athletic linemen that should keep the pipeline well stocked!! In fact the only question mark I see so far is at QB, where the one Kid I had looked forward to getting will likely be going to a private school....probably cause we don't throw enough :blah:

Either one of those RB's playing college ball?

You should have a meeting with incoming freshman and tell them about Nate. Talented but not enough to get a D1 scholarship so he studied and practiced hard and ended up with 30 out of 37k paid for through academic scholarships and will still get to play college football. Very good lesson IMO.

Reggie and Brian both went to Eastern Arizona JC. Reggie was definitely the better D1 prospect, but his academics were in the toilet before he transferred to Westview his Junior year and he was unable to get all the credits he needed in place. He has a good chance to move D-1 after he gets his AA.

Brian was being recruited fairly hard by Wyoming, but they wanted him as a DB due to his size (5'9" 175) it came down to his SAT score and he didn't quite get what was needed, so he will have to wait too. Quite honestly I see him as more of a slot guy in College, he is not really a natural as a DB as he has a tendency to lose focus at times. Both good Kids and smart, just not taken care of at the Schools they came from. If they had both been at Westview all 4 years their academics would have been in a lot better shape.

We finished our third day of Freshmen conditioning tonight and even though we only have 41 kids cleared (Will probably end up with 20-30 more by next week) I already like what I see. We will be loaded again in the backfield and our line will be bigger and at first glance more talented overall than last year. It bodes well for another good Season. We have had three 8-1 Freshmen Seasons in our 5 years at Westview, this may be the year we can get the magic 9-0......But I don't want to look that far ahead...so one game at a time!!

I will drag Candi in here tonight before I leave to watch the UFC, she is at work now..

Her schedule is insane as she is starting up with Primeamerica while she continues to work her "day" job LOL.

Post Re: Westview Football
OK, now time for the Westview Defensive preview.

Defensive Line:
By far the strength of our team this year as we have 3 solid seniors leading the way. Terry Williams will start at DE and is a beast (See his numbers under the Offensive preview) He will demand double teams on the strong side and even that won't always stop him as his strength is just incredible. Unfortunately for other teams, doubling Terry might not be an option as I would guess there are no centers in the state that can handle our NG Vincent Shatwell one on one on a consistent basis. He is another freak blessed with sub 4.9 speed and great strength (second strongest on team behind Terry) He gets off the ball incredible fast and has a great motor. Joining these two at the Stud end spot is Vincent Keener, a rangy 6'5" pass rushing specialist. He is nowhere near as strong as the other two, but quick off the ball and uses his leverage well. The DT spot will likely be manned by committee, with candidates including seniors Terrance White and Greg Snoke and junior Justin Temple. White and Temple are bigger, while Snoke is a 180 pound pest who gets lower than anyone I have ever seen in a 4 pt stance and is so quick it is difficult for bigger lineman to cut him off (He also likse to call opposing linemen Cupcake, which you gotta love) My guess here is White and Temple will see early down action and Snoke will be used in passing situations.

Linebackers:
A lot of options here and a couple of kids will learn both inside and outside positions to take advantage of matchups against certain opponents. junior Eric Ramsey is the leader here and he started all 14 games as a sophomore. He will play both the Rover (OLB to the weak side) and Will positions. He runs well and has a little dirt bag in him (good thing) on the field. Off the field one of the greatest kids you will ever meat and a team leader. (I don't like to be biased, but he is probably one of my top 5 favorite players ever) He is a tremendous hitter and has a great nose for the ball. James Salceda has probably worked harder than any kid in the program prepping for his senior year and has the Sam LB nailed down. He is quick and strong enough to take on pulling linemen and will also lay a hit on you. James is the perfect example of what hard work can do. Andrew Vargas and Victor Carrasco will both see time at the Mike and Will positions, and will often be on the field together when Ramsey is at Rover. Both are fireplugs, with low centers of gravity, but extremely tough. Carrasco is another who has worked extremely hard after being out all of his jr year hurt, and though his biggest contribution will come on the O-line, he will get a fair number of reps here. Vargas should be on the field at all times on Defense as he doesn't play Offense and will be relied upon to be a leader. He could have done more in the off season, but has picked it up heading into fall practice after a some "motivation." Other who could see time here are so Tony Hernandez, sr Chase Bakanowski (a great athlete, who needs to get a little meaner) and sr Kevin Gunn, actually Gunn should see a lot of time as he is an athlete, but that is dictated by his diabetes, which we have to watch closely during games.

Secondary:
The most inexperience part of the defense as we lost both starting CB's (Conley and Nicholson) and last years starter at Safety (Grandon) will not see as much time on D since he is the starting QB. When he is on the field he will now play corner to keep him out of the muck as much as possible. Jr Nate McOwen looks to have nailed down one corner spot, he is an extremely smart kid who does not make mistakes and has a nose for the ball. Two sophomores, Carlton Williams and Jordan Champion will split time at the other corner spot with the hope being that Champion can step up and take most of the reps. Grandon as mentioned will also get a few reps as he is our best lockdown corner by far, just too valuable as a QB to risk starting on defense. RJ Robinson and Cory Hemingway are others that could get some reps at CB. The safety spot has been tightly contested between jr Joe Espinoza and sr Joe Lauer. Espinoza will probably get the nod in our base package while either Lauer and/or Cody Miller will slide into the Rover spot when we go to our "knight" package, which moves the rover back from Linebacker to a safety position. It will be key to get this group in sync quickly as our third game will be against Deer Valley, who will throw it all over the place.

Schedule: (* Region game)
Maryvale - Still a long way from being a competitive program, though they have made strides. A good opener at home to get the butterflies out and get some confidence. Prediction - Win 48 - 7

at Pinnacle - They upset us at home last year with a great Defensive effort, but they lose a lot of seniors, including their playmaking QB. Will probably have a few Sophs on varsity this year as they had some good looking freshmen last year (We still beat them tough :D ) In the end our Defense makes the difference. Prediction - Win 24 - 13

at Deer Valley - Our green secondary gets tested by the aptly named Skyhawks, who won their region last year. They also lose a couple of big weapons, but return the leading QB in their region. We broke open a tie game at half last year to win going away 42 - 24 and I see the same pattern this year, though their QB will face much more pressure from our front 4 than he got last Season. Prediction - Win 42 - 20

Mesa - Our first really big test against a tough east valley school that plays in the states largest classification (5A-1, we are 5A-2) we will find out where we are real quick with this crew, who promise to be physical and have a few explosive athletes. Keeping it real we may stumble here. Prediction - loss 28 - 20

at Kingman - We waxed them on homecoming last year, but they started several sophs and will be improved. They also have a new Coach who comes from the jr college ranks in California, so they are an enigma now. Add to this that we play at there place, which is a 4 hour bus trip and always a tough crowd. They will be better, but they still shouldn't be able to hang with our athleticism. Prediction - Win 35 - 6

*at Sunrise Mountain - We open region play gainst the Mustangs, who have always had trouble stopping our Wing-T attack. They revamped their staff with a lot of new assistants coming in and word is they will go from an I formation team to the spread and throw quite a bit. Bottom line here is I doubt they can block our front four and we are tougher. Prediction - Win 42 - 14

*La Joya - They have one of the most dynamic players in the state in Jeremiah Cornist and plan to move him to QB and run a shotgun spread option attack with their stud Freshmen TB from last year starting alongside him. They will be explosive, but again they have never been able to shut us down and this year should not be any different. Fireworks galore, but we still prevail. Prediction - Win 55 - 27

*Centennial - Our top region foe, defending region and more importantly State Champs. They beat us 20-14 in the regular season and 26-7 in the 5A-2 State Title game. They lose their QB, top WR and top RB. The bad news is they are always loaded and return plenty of weapons for whoever their new QB turns out to be to utilize. By this time of the Season they should have gelled and they are still the team to beat in our classification. We will fight, but not quite there. Prediction - Loss 24 - 10

*at Ironwood - The Eagles were down last year after a pretty solid 3 year run and we handled them on live TV 45-7. There is a lot of bad blood between our teams, coaches and players alike and they will have this game circled. Having seen their players coming up the last 3 seasons, the talent pool has not been as deep and revenge will not be theirs. Prediction - Win 35 - 16

*Tolleson - The "War for the west!" This is our rivalry game as Tolleson is just 10 minutes away by bus. It is a rivalry that has gone from bitter to intense yet friendly as their current Head coach is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and a lot of the kids are friends off the field. Make no mistake though, they turn it up for the game and it is always physical. One more mistake not to make is to remember who owns this rivalry....US!! Since Tolleson moved back up to 5A 5 years ago we are 5-0 against them on varsity and 13-2 overall as a program.....Nothing changes here folks. Prediction - Win 33 - 0

Overall prediction for the regular Season 8 - 2
Possible swing games either way are Mesa and Pinnacle. I don't see any way we lose any of the others if we stay healthy and in all honesty we would need to play out of our bodies to beat Centennial. I will breakdown the playoffs when they get here, but I think we have another good run, again falling just shy of the ultimate prize.
